Meet Lisa Newport
Midlife women are in their Own Business Era: 25 for 25
For so many reasons, midlife women are in their Own Business Era.
I’m lucky to know many women who’ve left corporate culture, and are now building and scaling their own thing. Trademarking their IP, working solo or employing and contracting others.
During December, I’m publishing an alternative advent calendar featuring midlife women who’ve decided to be the boss of their own careers.
This series of posts, 25 for 25, features midlife women on the rise. Behind the next door on my alternative advent calendar is Lisa Newport, personal style expert.
I reclaimed my identity: Lisa Newport
Lisa Newport’s career evolved in a way she never expected. She thought she’d be retiring from a job in further education around now. Maybe she’s just not the retiring type! Instead, she’s carving a role as a personal style expert who believes in the power of dopamine dressing. She helps people get more visible, using the science and psychology of style.
Lisa believes what we wear doesn’t just influence how others see us. It shapes our behaviour and changes how we see ourselves. She knows this from personal experience. All the ways she used to express her own identity gradually disappeared over the years. Lisa hid in “slimming black”. Her wardrobe was dreary, and her home was just as bland. At the same time, Lisa felt incredibly unhappy.
“I dreaded going to work. I had a sick feeling in my stomach every night. My self-worth and confidence was stolen by a toxic workplace. The job was just not me. There was nothing about it that allowed me to be myself. My business became a way for me to reclaim my identity.”
Lisa realised that the power of her own story, plus all her knowledge and experience with colour, clothes, make-up and teaching, could come together to create a rewarding, fulfilling business that makes a difference to others.
2025 is for …
Next year is all about sharing her message far and wide. Lisa is keen to do more speaking gigs, so she’s actively looking for opportunities - podcasts, memberships, summits, virtual and in-person stages.
She’s hosting her annual SWISH Clothes Swap Fundraiser in February, in memory of her mum.
Lisa is also launching a new programme in March - Dressing for JOY!
Inspiration & motivation comes from …
“The lightbulb moments that clients get when they understand the transformation that is taking place - inside and out - when they've created a style recipe that amplifies their confidence, enhances their presence and reflects their brilliance.”
Lisa’s advice for her younger self
“Value yourself, seize the day and never make do. Invest the time and money doing the inner work to help you achieve it.”
“Value yourself, seize the day and never make do.”
